Gegužiai progymnasium is one of the biggest school in Šiauliai which is situatedin the northern part of Lithuania. Our school provides students with the primary (forms 1-4) and basic (forms 5-8) education. The pupils start their compulsory education at the age of seven. Primary school (ages 7-10) consists of 4-year studies. When finishing the primary school all students receive their first certificate of successful completion of the first stage of the compulsory education in Lithuania. Primary school students are not given marks. Their academic achievements are recorded in the written form. Primary students are usually taught all the subjects by the same teacher. From the 2nd form pupils have an opportunity to choose the English language as a subject. Besides, such specialists as Music, Art or Dance teachers may help the primary teacher.

Basic education (forms 5-8) means that all subjects are taught by different teachers in specialised classrooms. Students study such compulsory subjects: Lithuanian, Mathematics, Biology, Art, English, History, IT, Physical Education, Music, Chemistry, Physics. In the 6th form students can choose to study the second foreign language. It might be Russian, German or French.

The school year for the forms 1-5 comprises 32 weeks, while 6-8 formers study 35 weeks. All students start school 1st September and finish 31st May (forms 1-5) and 8th June (forms 6-8).  Apart from summer holidays which last for three months for 1-5 formers a little bit less for 6-8 formers, all the students have four additional holidays: autumn, Christmas, winter and Easter, the length of which vary depending on the students‘ form. Primary school pupils have two weeks of additional holidays: one week in autumn, another in spring.

The lessons start at 8 a.m. Each lesson lasts 45 minutes with 10 and 20 minute breaks in between. Usually the students finish their lessons at 1.40 p.m. After school students can attend various extra-curricular activities, such as dance, school choir, art or sport.

Gegužiai progymnasium is exceptional in the city in terms of Art and its Humanistic profile. When students finish the 4th form and the 8th form, they present their  final works of art. It might be a painting, a sculptureor a photographic work. There is also an Art Departament for primary school students, which means that pupils from 1-4 forms can attend additional art lessons and receive certificates of completing primary art school.

Gegužiai progymnasium organises various national and international conferences, seminars, projects, exhibitions and events. The most important projects are environmental (when students learn about the environmental issues, make things from waste), health projects. Gegužiai progymnasium also celebrates its name-day (13th May). Celebrating the 40th anniversary of the school establishment Gegužiai progymnasium published the book „40 Steps‘‘, which presents the most outstanding moments of the school history.

Gegužiai progymnasium keeps tight relationships with other educational, cultural organizations, i.e. schools, gymnasiums, progymnasiums, nursery schools, , the singing school „Dagilėlis“.

All students in Gegužiai progymnasium must wear uniforms and school badges.

The most distinguishing features of Gegužiai progymnasium are the alleys (this is how the corridors are called), the Stone of Success at the entrance to the school and the stairs which have the names („the Stairs of Values“ and „the Stairs of Friendship“). Finally, Gegužiai progymnasium has its own symbols. These are the badge of the school, the flag  and the mascots of the school: a pencil and a brush.
